My Story
I have been participating in FLL since 2016. I was introduced to FLL through a workshop held by high school girls at a local library. They showed us how they made a simple robot that controlled it using a laptop to do simple tasks at that workshop. From there, I got excited about robotics, and I participated in FLL for three years. Since 2019, I have participated in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). I have been on the mechanical team designing the robot using CAD, prototyping, and solving mechanical problems.
I pursued Computer Science in high school to learn to code in JavaScript. Most of my classmates were boys, but my teacher is a woman, and this is where I got my strength to keep working on Computer Science and complete the class. Similarly, my FRC robotics team is an all-girls team, and the lead mentors are women who show us the path towards a potential career in engineering. I have connections with the alumni from my FRC team who help guide me through classes and extracurricular activities in high school.
I have mentored the all-boys rookie team through FLL competitions in the last two years, strengthening my guiding, communicating, mentoring, and teaching skills. Having received valuable guidance, education, and skills in the fields related to Computer Science and Robotics, I am well suited to share my experience and knowledge with middle school girls.
My Project
Exciting after school Robotics workshop series for girls introducing robot building, programming and fun robot games using LEGO robots. All middle school girls encouraged to apply, preference will be given to girls enrolled in reduced or free lunch program belonging from the African American or Mexican American heritage.
