My Story
My engineering story started when I was in elementary school. Building things out of legos without instructions was my biggest passion. When I went to middle school, I realized that I really liked math and physics. I also enjoyed working on computer programming over the summer and helping my dad build furniture. After graduating, I realized that I wanted to do something that involved STEM, possibly with physics, a subject that I had grown to love with time. At Central High School, I was recommended to join the robotics club, so I went to the interest meeting, and I was hooked immediately. I knew then that I wanted to do something that involved problem-solving skills.
I had so much fun building the robots and helping brainstorm the parts that would work best with them, and then I knew that I wanted to be an engineer. Currently, I’m learning many skills that I believe will come in handy in the future: I am learning some physics, mechanical engineering, java programming, and CAD. All of these things make me happy, and I believe that these skills that I’m learning will really come in handy when I’m helping to mentor the girls during the program.
My Project
Philadelphia Girls Engineering Mentorship is an after-school program that will bring together younger girls from around the city interested in STEM. Participants will meet female scientists who will share their expertise in specialized fields of science and engineering and be introduced to the scientific world and process.
