What I Do I am a professor of biomedical engineering at the University of California Irvine (UCI). I also direct the Edwards Lifesciences Foundation Cardiovascular Innovation and Research Center, which is a research center within the school of engineering at UCI.
Why Engineering? I chose biomedical engineering because I was excited to use creativity and science to solve problems in human health.
School Days I trained at Swarthmore College, where I earned a BS in engineering, MIT, where I earned an MS in mechanical engineering, and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, where I earned a PhD in medical engineering.
My Day At Work I do a lot of writing and thinking as well as talking with colleagues and trainees. I don't do much bench science myself any more, or computer programming, but I help trainees design and interpret experiments and debug computer code.
Proud Moments My proudest moments have been seeing my trainees achieve their goals, like obtaining good data, publishing papers, and earning degrees.
My Family I am married to someone I met in graduate school and have three kids, aged 14, 17, and 19. None of them are engineers! But they are all pursuing their own creative and intellectual interests.
Hobbies I used to play a lot of ultimate frisbee and I still enjoy throwing a disc on the beach. Recently, I've jumped on the pickleball bandwagon!
