My Story
My initial exposure to engineering came from my parents, who are both engineers. They regularly encourage me to explore and pursue the field. Since I was young, my primary interest has been in Science, particularly Biology, and I have participated in STEM extracurriculars (Science Team, Math Olympiad, Science Fair, etc.), with relative success, for many years, which has contributed greatly to my interest in engineering. The knowledge I have gained from these extra-curriculars will be of great help when developing the content of my platform. I am aware that many younger girls do not possess the privileges I have, and thus don’t have the opportunity to enter this rewarding field of study; for this reason, many succumb to gender stereotypes and choose not to explore engineering. Also, as someone who is passionate about gender equality and has experienced the impact of gender roles, I want to promote diversity in engineering and Science. Furthermore, as someone who is passionate about STEM, I want to use my interests to positively impact my community.
My Project
I will build a learning platform about biomedical engineering comprised of videos, quizzes, and laboratory simulations, serving as a useful tool that provides exposure to biomedical engineering and motivates girls to explore engineering and its medical importance. This platform will be implemented in workshops in various regions of Puerto Rico.
