My Story
During my first year in middle school, I took a mandatory technology class. Little did I know how much those 10 weeks would change my life. With the support of an incredible teacher, even after the class was over, I continued to go to the workshop during lunch working on different projects such as building shelves out of recycled materials for my teachers. As more students took interest, the school first created a during-school tech club that eventually turned into the school’s makerspace program. Another teacher introduced me to Magnetic Levitation competitions where I won first place three times. I also became one of the founding members of our school’s news program, where I learned video editing and how to work with others to complete a complex project. My school also had a FLL team which at first I was eager to join. I then found out that I would be the only girl on a team of 20. I was too intimidated by this fact. When I started high school, I decided that being the only girl on a team will not prevent me from joining anything again. Now I am an active member of the FRC team. I also take as many technology classes as I can fit into my schedule. I take Introduction to Engineering, an honors college course offered through PLTW. I also take Woodworking and Media Productions.
My Project
I would like to spread my passion for STEAM and my passion for empowering girls so they can learn to believe that all they need is knowledge, confidence, strong work ethics and determination to achieve anything they want in any field they want. I will be conducting two programs for my project. The first one will be an after-school program. The second will be 3-hour hands-on expos in a couple of summer camps.
