My Story
I have been involved in FIRST® for over half of my life – volunteering since 2013 and on teams since 2015. Because of this incredible opportunity, I have skills that I never would have had without FIRST®. I am now confident and at ease when speaking publically. I know that all of my ideas are valid, and I know how to respect other’s ideas. I have learned to be gracious to those around me, and treat everyone equally and with respect. Through robotics, I have learned about designing, building, programming, electronics, and more. Because of this, I want to become an engineer. FIRST® has inspired me to change the world, and I would not be where I am now without it.
My Project
My Maker’s Space™ will be a fun, all-day program, at no cost to disenfranchised female participants and their siblings, that will include transportation to and from the event, lunch and snacks. Utilizing a FIRST® LEGO League Junior (FLL Jr.) Challenge, participants will be introduced to concepts in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) while exploring a real-world scientific topic. Using 21st century skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, time management, communication and conflict resolution; kids will design, build, program, test and improve a LEGO model with at least one moveable part, as well as create a Show Me poster. The day will culminate in an Expo where kids practice presentation skills while showcasing their accomplishments. Female STEM professionals and near peer mentors from FIRST® Robotics Competition and FIRST® Tech Challenge will work directly with girls and their siblings to engage them in all aspects of the program including exploration of engineering careers.
