My Story
My engineering story began in elementary school when we had to build towers out of uncooked spaghetti and tape to hold a marshmallow. I didn’t know that what I was learning was part of the field of engineering, but I fell in love with it anyway. I have participated in Science Olympiad since my freshman year and this activity has exposed me to a lot of engineering related events. I once had to build a car with my partner that was powered only by gravity and it was a fun experience. I have participated in science fair and TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science) that have have taught me about engineering, and how to lead and work with others.
My Project
My project will begin with the creation of a fun engineering resource that will spark girls’ interest in engineering. This will be an engineering magazine for girls and it will feature information about engineering fields along with engineering-related puzzles, activities, and games. I plan to include interviews with women in engineering, fun engineering facts, and resource and opportunities they can pursue.
The second part of the project will focus on independent engineering projects that the girls will pursue based on the knowledge they gain from the magazine. After the magazines have been distributed (either online or paper), we will start having online meetings to help the girls develop their project ideas, work on their projects, and present their finished work to their peers at the end.
Girls’ parents are encouraged to join them in the process. Everyone will receive certificates, and all the projects will receive special recognition depending on their best qualities (i.e most creative, most likely to change the world).
