My Story
In 2019, I won the EngineerGirl essay writing contest. Winning that contest opened up the world of engineering for me. It proved to me that even though I am young I can do my part in making the world a better place. I used the engineering design process to create an eco-friendly plastic and design environmental flatware for a science fair. I’ve taken many coding classes, and I am able to program robotics. I love art and I love coding. And, for the past two years I have been making art through code. I am currently teaching coding to students via Zoom in Kenya at the Ol Jogi School (@KidsTeachKenya). By teaching other girls coding, I am making use of the education I have to better a part of society, as well as exposing them to the world of STEM.
My Project
I will be teaching girls between the ages of 10 and 14 how to use code to create a self-portrait, a Jackson Pollock painting, Fractal art, and even a game called Nail Art. I will show them that the art they create on paper can be turned into a "sprite" or background in Scratch. My goal is to get girls to see coding as both a way to create and also as a way to create art.
The class will meet via Zoom and it will take place weekly. It will begin in May and it will run for a full year. Every 13 weeks, we will have a showcase of all student projects.
