Close Up
  • What I Do

I am a professor of biomedical engineering at the University of California Irvine (UCI). I also direct the Edwards Lifesciences Foundation Cardiovascular Innovation and Research Center, which is a research center within the school of engineering at UCI.

  • Why Engineering?

I chose biomedical engineering because I was excited to use creativity and science to solve problems in human health.

  • School Days

I trained at Swarthmore College, where I earned a BS in engineering, MIT, where I earned an MS in mechanical engineering, and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, where I earned a PhD in medical engineering.

  • My Day At Work

I do a lot of writing and thinking as well as talking with colleagues and trainees.  I don't do much bench science myself any more, or computer programming, but I help trainees design and interpret experiments and debug computer code.

  • Proud Moments

My proudest moments have been seeing my trainees achieve their goals, like obtaining good data, publishing papers, and earning degrees.

  • My Family

I am married to someone I met in graduate school and have three kids, aged 14, 17, and 19. None of them are engineers! But they are all pursuing their own creative and intellectual interests.

  • Hobbies

I used to play a lot of ultimate frisbee and I still enjoy throwing a disc on the beach. Recently, I've jumped on the pickleball bandwagon!

Volunteer Opportunities
  • I am willing to be contacted by educators for possible speaking engagements in schools or in after school programs or summer camps.
  • I am willing to host a field trip to my place of employment.
