Society of Petroleum Engineers

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is the largest individual-member organization serving managers, engineers, scientists and other professionals in the upstream segment of the oil and gas industry. Its mission is to collect, disseminate, and exchange technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development, and production of oil and gas resources and related technologies for the public benefit; and to provide opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence.

Student members

SPE Student membership is open to students enrolled at and carying at least 30% of a full-time academic load of courses at a college or univeristy. They must also be focused on a degree in petroleum or related field. Student members act within student chapters, which are linked to universities around the world and are supported by local sections.

Scholarships

SPE awards the Gus Archie Scholarship to an outstanding student who plans to enter a university and pursue an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering. The recipient will receive USD 5,000 per year for up to four years of university study. SPE also provides other scholarships to undergraduate and graduate student members.

Other opportunities

SPE offers several programs and competitions for student members including career fairs, networking events, mentor programs, and PetroBowl - a student competition in which SPE student chapter teams against each other in a series of quick-fire rounds, answering technical and nontechnical industry-related questions.
