Close Up
  • What I Do

I am doing PhD in chemical engineering as a research assistant currently at Mississippi State University. I work in the field of computation chemistry with expertise in catalysis science.

  • Why Engineering?

I choose to be a chemical engineer because they work to improve the quality of people's lives. Most items used by people everyday have needed chemical engineers to produce them. Chemical engineers are helping to end starvation, disease and poverty. They are working to save the environment by developing alternative technologies to combat acid rain, lead pollution and the greenhouse effect.

  • School Days

I go to Mississippi State University for PhD in chemical engineering.

  • My Day At Work

As a PhD student I spend most of my time to do my research for different R&D projects with NSF, NASA and DOE. However, I like to teach as well for that purpose I take classes as a teaching assistant. I am fun loving person so I do powerlifting and play basketball on daily basis.

  • Best Part

I enjoy the fact that engineering is so broad and it never gets boring. The variety of tasks, applied both in computational and traditional environment provide a highly customizable set-up for approaching my projects. I enjoy the rewarding feeling conferred by the Design and Manufacture processes, so common in engineering; they boost my motivation towards new successes. As an engineer I would have to, and be pleased to, help improve the lives of people in different ways.

  • Proud Moments

As an engineer getting a position as a PhD candidate was a great achievement for me. Apart from that, doing projects with NSF, DOE and NASA was another plus point.

  • Challenges

Success always brings challenges, and these are problems engineering educators are happy to have. But a careful, reasoned assessment of where this success has brought us, and where it is likely to lead, will ensure that our profession continues to produce leaders who make great strides in advancing our society.

  • Dreams and Goals

I want to gain industrial experience for a year or two. After that I want to continue my research to take my experience to another level which can change people's life.

  • Inspiration

I come from very middle class family. While growing up, I saw my father working 18 hrs in a day to feed us was certainly my biggest inspiration to do hard work and achieve something great.

  • Want to be an Engineer?

Go for it. If you are good at your job and show an aptitude for engineering, nothing should stop you from achieving your goals. Be prepared to meet some obstacles. But if you ignore the fact that you don’t meet the stereotype of a typical engineer, others will be forced to ignore it too.

  • Hobbies

Powerlifting, traveling, basketball, rock climbing, fishing, watching movies.

Biography
I am Varsha Jain, probably future professor in chemical engineering. I like to see chemistry at molecular level. I create different molecules in my computer and see how they move in realty. If you want to learn computational chemistry, I am your engineer girl!!
