My name is Mackenzie Smith, 22 years old, and currently an Elementary Education Major. What advice do you give to prospective teachers for teaching different subjects in the STEM fields?

I am doing a presentation about you for my peers to show contemporary scientists that are defying inequity in representation of the STEM fields. I find your story inspiring and am wondering what advice you can give my peers for teaching young students in the STEM field areas.

    Hi Mackenzie,

I'm glad that you reached out to me about this and I am so honored to be apart of your presentation! One key piece of advice that I would give to STEM educators is to show the real life application of the subjects being taught and also utilize those real-life applications in order to teach the subject. Many students become lost with the theoretical and conceptual aspects of STEM subjects, but if those theories and concepts can be directly tied in to real-life application, students will not only understand the importance of STEM, but students will also understand how their acquired knowledge in STEM can help in their everyday lives. Another piece of advice would be to seek out ways to allow students to explore various solutions to a problem versus only one solution because in reality, there are numerous ways to solve a problem. Truthfully, that is how students can express their own individual creativity and innovative edge.
