I'm worried about juggling motherhood

Hi, my name is Karly and I am a sophomore in college and I'm thinking about changing my major to civil or mechanical engineering but I'm worried about juggling motherhood (way down the line) with a job in the engineering field. I am currently majoring in physical therapy so it would be easy for me to convert to working part time if I was a physical therapist but I'm unsure how/if I would be able to work part time or work from home when I have a child. Are any of yall juggling motherhood with a engineering job? if so how do you do it?

    Hi Karly!

I just had a baby a year ago, so I understand your concern. I'm a software engineer, so luckily there's a lot of flexibility when it comes to working remotely. I also am fortunate in that I'm able to work part time.

I know that I'm super lucky and I think that it's the company I work for to thank, not the fact that I'm a software engineer. So I think a lot of it boils down to finding the right company that's willing to be flexible.

For instance, a government position might not be so flexible as finding a smaller company to work for. Since you don't want kids immediately, you'll also have a little more leverage once you put in a few full time years. I think most companies will be more willing to renegotiate your working conditions if they know they can count on you. You could also consider contracting work once you have some experience if you want to go that route.

I think there's always a balance to be found, and I wouldn't settle for a career that you're not enthusiastic about just because it's more convenient.

I can also say as a mom, that a lot of the things I thought I was going to want before motherhood changed once I had a baby. So there's no way to plan it all out to a tee now, you just have to roll with the punches and it will all work out!
