What I Do As a structural engineer, I design buildings/structures while collaborating with other engineering disciplines like civil engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and architects. I also am involved in the construction of my designs watching the building of the structures.
Why Engineering? I always enjoyed math and problem solving. I also had an interested in architecture and buildings too. Structural engineering was a great merge of all my interests.
School Days I went to the University of the Pacific where I attained my Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
My Day At Work I perform calculations, prepare drawings and project specifications. I also manage and oversee the work of a group of engineers and drafters.
Best Part I love the technical challenges with the projects I am involved in. There is always problem solving to be done. There is satisfaction in knowing you have solved a problem. I also enjoy collaborating with others to achieve a common goal and successful completion of a project.
Proud Moments I was very proud when I passed my structural engineering exam and attained my Structural Engineering (SE) license. I dedicated time to studying for the exam after work and once my kids were in bed. It was a tough time but very rewarding to complete.
Want to be an Engineer? Find a mentor and expose yourself to areas you are interested in. You don't know if you like something until you try it.
