What I Do I am a patent attorney! I get to learn about new inventions by engineers and help them protect their ideas and obtain a patent applications. I get to work with large companies (both national and international) to help advise on all their inventions (which for some companies could be thousands of patents for different inventions).
Why Engineering? At first I chose engineering because I liked math and science. Initially, I wanted to be an environmental engineer. I eventually chose mechanical engineer because I liked learning about how things moved to make things function.
School Days First, I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan and I received my Bachelor of Science. Then, I went to law school Wayne State University and earned my Juris Doctorate.
My Day At Work My daily work includes working inventors to discuss their ideas, examining scientific documents related to their inventions, and drafting and applying for patents.
Best Part I like being able to see the new designs before they are released to the public and know I helped make it possible.
Challenges Sometimes a new project can seem like I won’t ever understand it, but after a while, it just all starts to make sense. It helps to realize everyone feels that way.
My Family My husband and I have 2 cats. We have an exchange student from Ukraine who has become our ‘adopted’ daughter because she can not return home due to the war.
Inspiration My mom – she was a career counselor and helped me research types of jobs I would have fun and enjoy doing. I have her to thank for suggesting engineering as a career.
Want to be an Engineer? There are so many fun technologies that you can work on as engineer, no matter what type of engineering you study. Engineering gives you problem solving skills that are so valuable in any type of job, even outside of engineering (like law!).
Hobbies I like any sport that involves water -waterskiing, surfing, paddleboarding…and my newest sport – rowing!
