My Story
As a young girl, I was fortunate enough to have outstanding parents who constantly motivated me to break gender stereotypes and pursue my passions. One of the main things they stressed to me was STEM opportunities for my future career. Honestly, their motivations were a little materialistic. The main argument was that I would make a lot of money and be able to support my family in the future. Frankly, I am very delighted in my parent's materialistic ideals that enabled me to pursue so many math and science opportunities because I have grown a passion for logical based STEM. I feel as though I would be a great fit for this program because of my aspirations in STEM and experience in studies. Every year I have taken the hardest math and sciences courses in addition to extra STEM classes. Overall, I want to help the children that I have volunteered with over the last few years share my passion for STEM and understand their abundance of opportunities.
My Project
I will hold a three-day workshop at Casa Marianella. The dates and times are still under establishment but I envision a half-day camp for the children to attend. Each day they will come to the area in which the project will be held and start on a STEM-related activity such as a worksheet, small experiment, or model. Then the leaders will host an engaging lesson about an intriguing stem basic such as the water cycle or ocean ecosystem. After this, we will introduce/work on the extended experiment that will continue throughout the workshop. Children will have opportunities to engage in hands-on learning and ask questions. Depending on the time frame there will likely be a snack, lunch, or play break to give the kids a break. The second half of the workshop each day will be career and opportunity oriented which will hopefully include some guests and demonstrations. One focus of the camp will be to leave the children with plenty of time to ask questions, work hands-on, and explore STEM fields with their own curiosity.
