what are some job types or opportunities for chemical engineering? especially for a woman?

i am a second year chem e student and will need to go 5 years to graduate. I am thinking of possibly changing my degree due to money issues but I do not want to lose any credits. i wondered if there is a degree i could go for that is "one step down" from chem eng. no one at my university is willing to help me with options. thanks

    Dear Annie,

There are so many jobs available to a chemical engineer regardless of sex. Chemical Engineers work for Oil & Gas Companies, Consumer Goods Companies, Power Companies, Manufacturing Companies, Municipalities and more. I myself have worked in a variety of industries and in labs, plants, control rooms, remote field locations, and offices. Having an Engineering degree over say a technology degree (which could be considered a step lower) opens more doors and provides more career versatility and longevity. There really isn’t anything that is truly a step down from the actual engineering degree. If you truly want to be an engineer I would encourage you to take a look at all of your options including maybe looking at leveraging community college to take some general education courses (if they transfer), looking at another university that is more affordable, or even stretching out your schedule to allow you more flexibility to work/earn. Also be sure to look into scholarships or grants. If none of these options work, you could possibly explore chemistry or another related major - I’ve known some who have tried another field of engineering and found it was a better fit for them. I hope this helps you in your decision making process. Best wishes.
