Questions I would like to ask: What is your current career title? Where are you currently employed? How long have you been an engineer? Why did you choose to become an engineer? What type of education did you need to have to become an engineer, and are you still in any current education or training program? How many hours do you usually work in a week? The opportunity to solve complex problems. You're always dealing with interesting problems that require deep thinking and the use of different techniques, from design thinking to machine learning, to be solved. > What high school courses may help me prepare for this career? Anything related to math, physics, and programming will be valuable. Biology can be helpful too, if you're interested in biotechnology. >What advice would you give to a high school student like me preparing for a future in engineering? Be curious and cultivate a diverse reading habit. Read widely, not only within the field of engineering and related areas, but also fiction and books on behavioral economics, ethics, psychology, and other topics. Reading allows us to step inside other minds and understand the world from different points of view. This is the best "superpower" you can develop to succeed in engineering. Adriana Beal , BealProjects.com Answered Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 10:15 AM Answering in two parts because of the 2000-char limitation. PART I > What is your current career title? Senior consultant, cloud optimization solutions. > Where are you currently employed? Cloudwiry, a company that offers cloud optimization services for businesses using public cloud. > How long have you been an engineer? 25 years. > Why did you choose to become an engineer? I dislike routine work, andI knew that as an engineer I'd have the opportunity to work in a variety of industries, tackling interesting problems. In my first job I designed electronic circuits for data transmission devices. Then I went on to define software requirements for a trading system, and now I work with optimization of cloud infrastructures. > What type of education did you need to have to become an engineer, and are you still in any current education or training program? I got a Bachelor of Science in Electric Engineering 25 years ago, then an MBA in Strategic Management of Information 15 years ago, and last year I received a Data Analytics and Big Data Certificate from the University of Austin. I didn't need this particular education to perform most of my jobs, but the technical knowledge I acquired during my B.Sc. in EE was instrumental for the development of a successful career, and continued education helps me keep relevant in the job market. > How many hours do you usually work in a week? 40 hours.
