If that is the case you will probably need to do some things to bring your skills up to speed and show a potential employer that you are a good hire. Maybe do some engineering-related volunteer work, get a job in a company working under other engineers for a while as a start, take a course related to what you want to work on, etc. All these things can go on your resume and serve to show a potential employer that you have what it takes.
