Why would you recommend that someone like me be an engineer? As a systems engineer, I personally enjoy the design discussions and giving "life" to an idea or design - it is where ingenuity, invention, or improvement comes into play in what I do. The most fulfilling feeling for me is to see the solutions I helped to design being deployed or delivered to a customer. That very tangible result is what drives me. It is not daily and requires patience and perseverance but if you are driven or feel accomplished by very tangible results, I am sure you will enjoy it as well. Another technical area is being a subject matter expert (SME). They concentrate in a particular area that they know like the palm of their hands. This type of role is great too - they are the "go to" person for any new project that comes about involving their area of expertise. If you enjoy being the expert and digging down into the deep details of a particular area, your results would be a little less tangible as they will depend on other aspects of a system but will never be less important. Hope this gives you an idea of what makes us engineers very special. I like helping people, so I like being an engineer. Tamara Floyd-Smith , West Virginia University Institute of Technology Answered Monday, December 19, 2022 at 8:50 AM I love that my profession, engineering, gives me the skill set to solve problems on the job and in my personal life. Nancy Post , Boston Consulting Group Answered Monday, December 19, 2022 at 8:51 AM I love being a female in engineering for many reasons. I love to solve problems. I have been able to use my math and science skills, paired with my creative energy to create solutions that help people. It’s an exciting field that allows for advancement and also allows you to change what you do along your career path. Garima Garg , Verizon Answered Monday, December 19, 2022 at 8:52 AM I love this question. It smells of the curiosity brain. I love being an engineer because the sole purpose of an engineer is to solve problems. I firmly believe there is a solution to every problem. We just need to look hard. On top of that, girls and engineering are a perfect match. Girls are naturally problem solvers, and their creative thinking helps with finding solutions faster. Jenny Boothby , Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab Answered Monday, December 19, 2022 at 8:52 AM I love problem solving! Being an engineer isn't a profession for me, it's a way of thinking. My passion is coming up with new ideas for problems and being an engineer has always been the right choice for that. It gives me a new perspective on problems that can be helpful in all sorts of seemingly unrelated subject areas. My favorite crossover right now is taking chemistry and materials knowledge and applying it to help solve problems in biology, like keeping coral reefs from disappearing. I think everyone should learn some amount of engineering to learn a new way of thinking. Just like learning a new language or learning to code, it shifts your way of thinking about the world. Plus, the world needs more problem-solvers! Tricia Berry , The University of Texas at Austin Answered Monday, December 19, 2022 at 8:53 AM I love being an engineer because I love figuring things out, problem solving, and making things better. My engineer brain looks at the world and wonders “what if” – and I love coming up with creative solutions to make our world, my workplace, our environment, or my own home a better place. Whether it is figuring out how to make a process more efficient or making sense of data and translating it into charts and infographics to help others make a decision, I’m applying math and science and technology to end up with a solution. It may take me many tries and I may experience many failures or set-backs, but that “what if” keeps me going and I love the product that comes out at the other end. I recommend engineering to anyone like you who loves seeing what others are doing in this space, is curious and asks questions, and maybe also wonders “what if”! Laura Helbling , Aster Brands Answered Monday, December 19, 2022 at 8:55 AM I love being an engineer for many reasons. The first that comes to mind is that I am a critical thinker and love challenges. I work as hard as possible to come up with solutions for those challenges. I have been this way my entire life, so I knew at a young age that an engineering career would be a good fit for me. Being a female in a male dominated field can be a bit daunting at times, especially during my undergraduate college classes where I was the only girl. However, I took pride in the fact that it wasn't easy and continued to challenge myself to persevere through the tough times. Another reason I love being an engineer is that I practice a less common segment of civil engineering, which is geotechnical engineering with a specialty in retaining wall design. There are not many people that practice in this field in general, and women in the field is even less common. I still get a smile on my face when talking to new people and they find out my career path as it's not common. If you have similar interests and a passion for problem solving, a career path in the engineering field seems like a good fit for you. Una Trivanovic , METAS (Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology) Answered Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at 9:15 AM I love being an engineer because I get to apply scientific knowledge to solve problems. It's an extremely diverse field so you can work towards solving many different problems depending on what excites you and the results are very tangible unlike in a pure science where you may be far away from the application. Another really great part of engineering is that it's a well paid career you can do in many different places around the world so you can choose to live where ever you would like.
