I would say that the best way to start preparing for a career in Mechanical Engineering is to encourage a love of “tinkering” and always be curious about how and why things work (and why they don’t work too!). There’s a vast range of exciting disciplines within mechanical engineering, which is always expanding, so I now cover things like coding and electrical parts within my job. There are lots of interesting products available which can help with learning to design and build, so explore some of those with her.

A good understanding of maths is essential so encourage this and usually this could go hand in hand with a logical thought process so I always really enjoyed logic puzzles, which I think has helped.

I would always recommend getting as much hands on experiences as early as possible, so as she gets older see if there are any local businesses who will have her in as work experience or if there are any local clubs which can be joined? (Find programs in your area on the Explore Possibilities page)
