Hi, I am 30 years old with a full time job, and 3 kids (2 of which are under 2yrs old), I have not gone to school since HS and I am considering going to school for civil engineering, I was good at math in HS but I am nervous to start college and wondering if its even a possibility to pursue school in this field while maintaining a full time job and taking care of my family?! I have spoken with my spouse and I could do a part time job if needed but I am wondering if any of you were in a similar situation and can lend some advice and insight as to what to expect. Good for you! I think it's perfectly normal to be apprehensive when considering a big decision like this. Sure, managing a family, work, and college sounds like a lot, but it can be done. Many colleges and universities offer distance learning and evening classes to accommodate the varying needs of students. Some of these options may make it easier for you to pursue your degree while taking classes online or after hours. Also, you don't have to take a full time load of courses. It will take you longer to complete your degree, but it's possible to take just a couple at a time (6-8 credit hours) until you finish. I completed my Master's degree this way by only taking one class at a time and I found it very manageable with full time work and family. Of course, your spouse and family will need to step up a little more to support you as you devote some time to your education, but you can do it!
