Emma AddedTuesday, July 18, 2017 at 8:09 AM I'm in year 12 now and I'm interested in going into engineering next year at a university but I've never actually done anything engineering based. Will I be okay? Does everyone who chooses engineering already have a fair amount of engineering skills? The answer is absolutely, you'll be okay. I went into college with having absolutely zero engineering skills outside of the two advanced math classes that I took in high school. Everyone comes in with a different amount of experience with engineering but that's okay! Some individuals are given more opportunities before college to explore those skills while some are not. If you're worried about being behind, an easy way to set yourself apart within engineering (once at college) is to get involved with a student group that works on engineering projects. There's often upperclassmen that are very willing to teach the new members what they know. You may also have to work a little harder at the beginning (I know I did) but your level of knowledge will likely balance out after the first semester or two. Once you get into the more advanced classes, almost everyone is starting off at the same level of knowledge. Feel free to reach out!
