Generally software engineers focus on application-level software while computer engineers focus on firmware and/or hardware design. I'm a software engineer with a degrees in computer science and mathematics and I have written enterprise software (front- and back-end) for the telecommunication, finance, e-commerce and now pharmacy industries. I never touch the hardware my software My sister has a degree in computer and electrical engineering and has designed hardware and written firmware for storage enclosures and now medical devices.
