Sarah AddedMonday, January 30, 2017 at 8:31 AM I was wondering how hard it is to find a job as a mechanical engineering. Do you have to be in advance math classes to pursue this major. Hello! I am really good at math and I love it too. However, I am not taking advance math classes. Does that mean I will not be good for this job? Another thing, my orginial plan was to be a biomedical engineer, but I heard finding jobs are really hard. Is that the same for mechanical engineer? Within mechanical engineering there any many different career paths and opportunities for graduates due to the large amount of topics the degree covers. To answer your question specifically about taking advanced math classes - it is does not mean you will not be good for the job or the field. When you begin college, no matter what type of math you complete in college - most freshman engineering students start with Calculus and take all three class of calculus, and differential equations and some linear algebra. The calculus classes are a little easier if you take them before you start college, however it is not necessary because you will be able to get the hang of it during school. I do recommend that if possible you take up to Pre-Calculus in your high school curriculum if possible to set you up to start calculus when you being college - otherwise you will start in college algebra and it will extend your time in college. In terms of your plan to be a biomedical engineer, I wouldn't say jobs are hard to find, they are just very specific and sometimes limited to one or two companies. However if it is your passion - go for it. The curriculum for mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering are slightly similar, however only are very similar if you are in the bio-mechanics field of biomedical engineering. Mechanical Engineering is a more generalized degree program so it allows the graduates to do a plethora of different jobs as opposed to limiting them to a few careers. Just consider your options and what kind of career would make you happy. Let me know if you have any questions - happy to help!
