Why Engineering?

It’s great seeing a device that actually has your parts in it, whether it’s a cell phone or an MP3 player. It’s so cool to see the product in a store, and know that the parts you designed made it work.

My dad was an engineer and got me a computer program when I was little. It was fun. And I had no idea that this was actually related to engineering.

Julie designs parts for some of the coolest things you may own—cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, video games, and hand-held electronic devices. She spends about half of her time working closely with customers and the marketing department to develop the concept for the part; she spends the rest of her time designing and testing. Julie loves the creativity involved in working in such a cutting-edge field: “Everybody wants something new,” she remarks. “So a lot of times you feel like you’re almost reinventing these devices. You’re tasked with something that no one’s done before.” She holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Southern Maine, Portland, Maine. Julie works in the R&D (research and development) group of Fairchild Semiconductor in South Portland, Maine.

How she became interested in engineering: “My dad was an engineer and got me a computer program when I was little. It was fun. And I had no idea that this was actually related to engineering.” For her the best part is seeing the things she has created for sale, “It’s great seeing a device that actually has your parts in it, whether it’s a cell phone or an MP3 player. It’s so cool to see the product in a store, and know that the parts you designed made it work.” Her favorite project was designing a state-of-the-art component for high-definition television and home theater systems. “One of the most satisfying things is to have your design come out, have the customers just love it, and watch the sales go through the roof!” Julie enjoys road races and marathons, skiing, basketball, soccer, and playing with her yellow Lab puppy.
