I want to know the possibilities of getting a job after PhD in chemical engineering

Hello, I am a PhD student right now. In future, I can see myself as working in a Chemical Industry mainly based on Polymer or as a product engineer. I would love to work on manufacturing field also. I want to know the possibilities of getting a job after PhD in such fields. Would it be tough to get a job after PhD? My research subject is nanomaterials. I am an international student. What qualifications are needed for an international student to fulfil the criteria of a company? Thank you.

Hi Debaroty, yes you can get a job in industry with a PhD. It really depends on the industry and the company as to what that job might look like. You could work in a research group developing ways to incorporate nanomaterials into existing or new products. You could be in a group that provides plant support for operations or in an engineering role as part of the operations staff. I think you'll need to decide if you are more interested in research at a company or in operations, and then find a company that fits your interests and specialty.

As for being an international student, if you are trying to get a job in the US each company you talk to will be different. Some require that you have a visa to work in the US prior to interviewing and being hired. Others will sponsor visa for employees. You will just have to ask each company and see how they handle that situation. For positions outside the US, again you will have to talk to each company to see what their policy is. Best of luck with your PhD and job search!
