I would like to work for the cosmetic industry

Hi Engineers! I'm a junior in High School, and I've been thinking about applying to colleges lately. I've been thinking about couple of options I'd like to major in. I'm mostly interested in chemistry. I'd like to become a cosmetic chemist one day. I'm more interested in the actual product development in the cosmetic industry. I was thinking about applying as a chemical engineering major, but my friends and teachers have been telling me that I could possibly apply as a biochemistry or pharmacy major. I'm still not sure what major I should apply as. Could you give me some advice? Thank you.

Hi MJ! Definitely sounds like you want to be a cosmetic chemist OR a cosmetic engineer if you're interested in product development. I have lots of engineering friends in the cosmetic engineering space who have been able to do cool things such as work on new formulations for soaps, shampoos, mascara, etc.! You might check out some great videos by L'oreal about careers in the cosmetic industry (https://www.youtube.com/user/careersatLOREAL/videos) - lots of engineers and scientists profiled throughout their videos. Another great article on chemical engineering (my background) and cosmetic engineering can be found at http://work.chron.com/chemical-engineering-jobs-cosmetics-30479.html. This talks more in detail about what you do as a chemical engineering in the industry. Two more resources for you: 1) https://careertrend.com/can-chemical-engineer-work-cosmetics-company-42085.html and 2) http://chemistscorner.com/how-to-become-a-cosmetic-chemist/. I highly encourage you to consider engineering as the pathway. You can head straight into a job with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and the degree will provide you great flexibility should you decide you like the food industry, consumer products industry, oil and gas industry, finance industry or any other industry a bit more as you explore throughout college. Your interests may evolve as you gain experience in research labs on your college campus or in internships during your college career. Engineering is broad - you can do anything you want with the degree and it's a great lead into cosmetics!
