Biography

Efi Foufoula-Georgiou (NAE) is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Henry Samueli Endowed Chair in Engineering at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). She is also the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in the Samueli School of Engineering and holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Earth System Science.  From 1989-2016 she was a faculty at the University of Minnesota as a McKnight Distinguished Professor in Civil Engineering, the Joseph T. and Rose S. Ling Chair in Environmental Engineering, and a Founding Fellow of the Institute on the Environment. She has served as Director of the NSF Science and Technology Center “National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics” (NCED) and Director of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory at the University of Minnesota. She received a diploma in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and an M.S. and Ph.D. (1985) in Environmental Engineering from the University of Florida, Gainesville. Her area of research is hydrology and geomorphology, with special interest on scaling theories, multi-scale dynamics of precipitation and landforms, and the interaction of climate and the terrestrial environment. She has served as associate editor of Water Resources Research, J. of Geophysical Research, Advances in Water Resources, Hydrologic and Earth System Sciences, J. Hydrometeorology, and deputy editor of PNAS Nexus. She has also served in several advisory boards including the Water Science and Technology Board of the National Academies, NSF Advisory Council for Geosciences, and NASA Earth Sciences Subcommittee. Her elected positions include chair of the Board of Directors of CUAHSI (Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences), Trustee of UCAR, and President of the Hydrology Section of AGU. Professor Foufoula-Georgiou has been the recipient of the John Dalton Medal of EGU, the Hydrologic Sciences Award of AGU, the Hydrologic Sciences Medal of AMS, the Horton Lecturer of AMS, and the Langbein Lecturer of AGU. She is a fellow of AGU, AMS, AAAS and an elected member of the European Academy of Sciences and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE).
