  • What I Do

I am a transportation engineer that focuses on intelligent transportation systems (ITS). My work includes design, project management, and construction management for projects throughout Colorado. ITS projects that I oversee and am involved with include fiber for a network of device communications to a centralized traffic management center to monitor roadway and traffic conditions, corridor safety, connected vehicle communications and tolling operations. Installation of these devices and associated roadway work is also part of the work that I oversee and design.

  • Why Engineering?

I originally picked engineering because I was a huge math nerd in high school - algebra and calculus were my favorite classes.

  • School Days

I went to Michigan Technological University in the upper peninsula of Michigan. My degree is in Environmental Engineering.

  • My Day At Work

I love problem solving and working with cutting edge technology! And it is fun to work on projects that affect how I get information on the roadway and how I commute.

  • Best Part

I love working with other engineers and Contractors who are as interested in the technology as me and who want to successfully complete a project. My favorite moments are when we run into a constructability issue that could not have been foreseen during the design phase so we have to head back to the meeting room or get on the phone with multiple agencies to collaborate and get creative to solve the problem. Also, I love that my boss is a male who advocates for me and takes the time to bounce around ideas for difficult problems!

  • Proud Moments

My proudest moment was stepping into the lead ITS role on a construction project. I was the only woman field lead on the project, but the team treated me no different. I'd like to see more women leading our construction teams in the future!

  • Challenges

I originally went to school for environmental engineering, but either I was at the wrong company or chose the wrong path for me so I pivoted to the transportation industry. In my first job, it was difficult to be a part of a team that didn't collaborate and didn't take time to help my career growth. I often found that I was unhappy and falling short in performing work that I didn't know how to do and couldn't get the help I need to do it right. Once I made the move to my current company, I could tell that it was right. I work with a young team that is all about team work and I couldn't be happier. And the work that we do is so much more interesting to me.

  • My Family

I have been married for close to two years now to my husband, Matt and I have a nine month old, Nora. We also have a dog, Archie. My parents and siblings all live back in Minnesota and his family is all over the east coast and in Texas.

  • Dreams and Goals

My short-term goal is to be ITS lead another major ITS and tolling project in the state. My long-term goal is to be a program manager who supports business development at our company and mentors young engineers who are newer to navigating the industry. I want to help grow a new generation of successful and passionate engineers, after all, it's all about having a great team!

  • Inspiration

My husband has a lot of influence when it comes to what I do. He helped me to realize that I should apply for my current job even though it felt like a long shot. Imposter syndrome hit me so hard when I started, but then there was a supervisor switch, and my new supervisor has helped lift me up to be a better employee and be more confident over the last three years.

  • Want to be an Engineer?

My advice is to not be afraid to step into a field where sometimes you are the only woman in the room and speak up. When it comes to the work that I do in construction, I've realized that most of the time I'm the only one who actually understands the technology and the contractual requirements and often the men are just speaking up because they think no one will notice that they don't know anything. My other advice would be to get involved in organizations where you can meet other engineers or other people who want to be engineers. It's fun to talk about all of the cool things that you can do as an engineer and all the problems that you can help solve! Engineers aren't just nerds who are good at math, we are problem solvers who need to work together to help shift the way things are being done in the real world to make them more efficient and better.

  • Hobbies

I instructed yoga and fitness classes as a side job for 7 years while I was also practicing as an engineer. I love hiking and skiing. I have re-discovered reading, it is way more fun when it is for pleasure and not for school or a big exam.

Biography
My name is Alyssa Segall. I am originally from Minnesota and earned my Environmental Engineer degree at Michigan Technological University on Lake Superior in 2010. I started out designing storm water and drinking water systems, but I wasn't happy doing that. So in 2017, I found a job in transportation engineering. I am now construction engineer in the transportation industry. The work that I do helps improve safety, reduce the time that cars sit in traffic, and provide improved messaging about weather, road closures, and traffic to drivers. In my spare time, I love doing and teaching yoga. I also enjoy spending time outdoors on hikes and skiing in the mountains with my family.
