Jennifer Gregory asked Sara Damas, Collins Aerospace AddedWednesday, January 6, 2021 at 10:22 PM How hard is mechanical engineering? I'm hoping to become a mechanical engineer in the future, but the thing that scares me the most is the math and physics. I can't really do the math in my head that well. Do you use calculators for math problems? and how much math do you have to do in one day? Is it it hard? I'm a high school senior, and going to be going to engineering classes hopefully in the next two years or so, and want to know what to expect when I go to classes and when I'm an engineer. Also, would I not be taken as seriously as others because I have a small speech problem? I have problems trying to say things, but it usually doesn't come out as I mean it to, and have to repeat myself sometimes when I stammer over words. Thank you for your question. We do use math everyday but the intensity and detail of the math we use to solve our problems varies day by day. Sometimes we might use known functions, often solved by programing or machines and other times we use simple geometry we figure out by hand. You are allowed to use all the resources that you need to solve your issue. Therefore, you don't need to memorize or figure it out in your head. Quite often it's not that simple anyways. In school they teach you a wide range of skills and feed you a ton of information. However, once you get into industry you'll find that you use some skills and information more than others. Some of the issues we solve are complex, however rarely do you engineer by yourself. You're on a team of several people with a wide range of experience, who can all help you. I often consult with my mentor when I can't figure out the best way to solve a problem. Your speech problem is not an issue! Sometimes in meetings I get nervous and start stammering over my words as well. We're all understanding adults in this industry and we're very accommodating. Therefore, it won't be an issue. Good luck on your journey! Best, Sara M. Damas Design Engineer Collins Aerospace
