How do I know if engineering is for me?

I'm Payton. I am just a normal person like everyone else. The other day in my science class, I was watching a movie about Engineering. It looks FUN, but I just don't know. How do I know if engineering is for me?

Hi Payton! I agree with, Ana - you do not need to be a genius to be an engineer! I really loved Math in high school, but struggled with a bit with some of my science classes. Engineering is FUN, but it can be hard work. I love my job because of the work and that every day I working to find a solution to a different problem!

Now to figure out if engineering is you, the best advice I can give is look for opportunities beyond school about engineering. My junior year, I attended an engineering camp for girls at a local college. At the camp, we did labs in ALL different fields of engineering and the ones about Civil Engineering were my favorite which is why I chose to study Civil Engineer in college. I also agree with Ana's idea of seeing if you can shadow a local engineer - even just for the day.

Engineering is a fun job to do, I tell you that from experience. You don’t have to be a genius in math or science to become and engineer but like any other degree, it takes discipline and desire to want to do it. In my engineering career, I get to work with people from different fields and interact with customers explaining the nature of various systems and why things work or not. If you are someone that likes to solve problems, create new things or improve the nature of the things that exist around you, or simply make a difference in the world, engineering can be for you. If you like to ask questions, learn new things, and are proactive and take initiative when given a task, then you are a perfect fit for engineering. Please note that engineering is a very broad career and allows you to get into any field of your choice, even if not in the engineering realm, but it is not the same when you go into another field and you later want to enter engineering (the skillset doesn’t match).

If you want to get a taste for what engineers do on a day to day, try to shadow an engineer for a day or attend science fairs. Connect yourself to people that are already in the field to ask questions about what they do. Having role models in your life in areas that you want to try is a good start to getting involved.

Aside from that, engineering can provide you with the financial freedom to support a family and all the things that come with having a family.
