Do I need to have prior knowledge in engineering before I can major in mechanical engineering?

I did my degree in the UK and so maybe its slightly different. I didn't have any mechanical engineering knowledge when I started but the pre-requisites to get on the course were good grades in Maths and Science. I think as long as you are strong in those subjects the 'engineering' can be learnt during your studies.
