Industrial Engineering, good move for career?

I'm interested in getting my Bachelors in Industrial Engeering online. And I was curious if this is a good field to go into for a woman? Would I have much luck finding job oppertunities? And is it all construction like work or would it be what you make it? I wanted to major in Mathematics but living in California, the school is just way too expensive. If you have any advice I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks!

    Hi Jade,

Thanks for the question! First things first, I don't think there is any "bad" field for a woman to go into. If that is where your interests lie, then go for it! As with many STEM fields, you will almost certainly be outnumbered by men, but in no way does that mean that you shouldn't or don't deserve to be there!

The benefit of an IE degree is that it can be broadly applied. They types of opportunities you find will probably be affected by your region - for example, as a metro Detroiter, almost all of the opportunities around me are in the automotive industry. The advantages of any engineering degree include the problem solving and critical thinking skills you acquire throughout completing your degree. That being said, with an Industrial Engineering degree, you'll probably be directed towards a shop floor/factory/manufacturing type role. If that doesn't totally appeal to you, I recommend considering supplementing your degree (if they aren't included in your program) with some business, management, or supply chain type courses to broaden your skill set.

    Good luck!
