Hi, I've just finished my first semester at university and am having a bit of trouble deciding on what to major. The program i'm in at the moment is science but i have chosen engineering classes for next semester because it seems like engineering has much better career prospects. I am having trouble figuring out if i am fit for engineering. I did physics, chemistry and maths last semester and got a distinction in both physics and maths and a high distinction in chemistry. I am wondering how you figure out if you are more fitted to being a scientist or engineer? I don't feel like i am creative and have always felt like maths is my weak subject and i enjoy working with theories and concepts more than numbers. Do engineers have to love maths, or is it enough to love the theory behind it to be a good engineer? This is my job and I am absolutely horrible with math, I've never understood it. As a Safety Engineer you deal with OSHA regulations and determining how to protect employees and keep businesses compliant with regulations. You also get into review drawings and specification for projects which allows you to ensure hazards are not being designed in unintentionally, and if they are to recommend remedies for the hazard. Some Safety engineers also get into designing machine guards and barricades. This is a field that is expanding for women, every year I see more and more girls coming in from colleges around the country. It's a very rewarding career. It also lets you be a little bit of a scientist too because we deal with chemicals and chemical exposures. If you aren't sure which you should pursue ask yourself this, Do I want to know how things work or why things work? Scientists research the why and Engineers create the how, or so my brother advised me when I was in college.
