Miea, California AddedTuesday, August 12, 2014 at 2:14 PM Choosing an engineering major I am 23 years old I just obtained my Associates in Applied Science in July 2013. I also completed my certification for Medical Assiting. I was originally going to school for my Bachelors majoring in Interactive Media and Web Design (I completed about a year and a half right out of highschool) :( unfortunately due to financial issues and family I had to put that on hold to pursue something I could obtain faster. I now want to go back to school to pursue my original career but was thinking of going for Industrial Engineering and Design. In Middle school and High School I was in advanced placement math courses and went up to Pre-Calculus (you would never think that I did not like math as I excelled and naturally good at it). I also took photography, ceramics, multi-media, and economics in high school as I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in design/art. Chemestry and Biology were my favorite sciences in high school (never really cared for much of the others unless it was Geoscience, I found the 3 most interesting.) Now that a little of my background is out of the way. I need a little guidance; (What is the best engineering field to pursue for me, school, etc.) I know my high school transcripts wont do much seeing I have some from college now which would include both art (photoshop, design, and photography)and science (anataomy, physiology, and psychology) I love helping people, expressing my creative side, and working with my hands. I want to be able to work towards the cosmetics/makeup industry (for example Sephora Corporate) or pertaining with interior design (I love HGTV most favorite when they listen to the needs and turn nothing into something i.e property brothers, income property, yard crashers, or splash of color). I love art but like to have the functionality, the reasoning of why a specific design is chosen why it works, how it expresses the feeling/message. It is really impossible to say what area of engineering would be best for you, since it will really depend on what you want to work for. If you are serious about working in the cosmetics industry, then I would suggest chemical engineering, but architectural or civil engineering might also be of interest to you. Check out our Try on a Career section to get an idea of what you can do with each field. Then go in the direction of your gut. Most engineering schools will let you take the first year as an “undecided” engineering major, so you can take some time to figure out what suits you best. Good luck!
