How can I find an internship?

Do you have any tips for find and applying for an engineering internship? Should I start looking while I'm in high school or wait until college?

Hi Amber! Thanks for your question! There are a handful of internships that you can apply to in high school but these can be very competitive or only available to students who live in the surrounding area of the company. I would research what engineering companies or universities there are in your local area and search their website for internships. Universities may also offer summer research programs to high school students but usually you must be 16 years and older.

It is also totally fine to wait until college! I did not have my first industry internship until my senior year of college! You can attend career fairs at your college or at different conferences which are great opportunities to meet with tons of companies. Your school will also have different resources and support offices to help students obtain internships or co-ops, prepare your resume, practice for interviews, and more. College is a great time to try out different engineering industries to see what you like and what you don't like.

Don't feel pressured to find an engineering internship while you are in high school! Other experiences like working a minimum wage job or volunteering are great things to participate in while you are young.
