I've worked in labs that had burning gas, or tanks of hydrofluoric acid (that stuff is deadly!), or around giant aircraft parts that were being tested or assembled, and I've felt completely comfortable in every situation because by law, my employers were required to have me and all of my colleagues perform safety training to understand how to work safely around those (including protective gear to wear), what protective measures were put in place at the facility itself, and how to report any conditions that come up making us feel unsafe. Nowadays I work on a computer full time instead of part time in a lab or on the manufacturing shop floor, but my employer still provided ergonomic computing equipment for me to perform my job comfortably and safely. It's always good to ask what resources are available to you to help you feel more comfortable on the job! And ALWAYS ask questions about the work environment, day-to-day tasks, etc. before accepting a position so that you can find something that's a better fit if need be.
