How do engineers use their engineering background and education at the workplace?

I use my broad engineering education in the workplace (all the basics of civil and the approach to problem-solving) but learned my specific discipline, transportation, on the job. That's what's great about an engineering education. It's versatile and you can and must continue to learn and build on it as you continue through your career.
