Samantha Patrick AddedTuesday, June 6, 2017 at 9:29 PM Im doing a project for school, and i would like to ask a few interview questions, is that okay? Hello, my name is Samantha Patrick from Thornburg Middle School, and currently are working on researching a career project. I am focusing my project on engineering, and I have a few questions that if you could please take your time to answer. Thanks, Sam. What classes in college helped you with your career? What do you find most enjoyable about engineering? Is there anything that specifically made you want to become an engineer? Where are you hoping to get to, with your career choice? Is this your dream job? What makes engineering different? What colleges/degrees did you attend to get your career? Is there any specific courses you need to take? First of all, I'm a mechanical engineering major now working at a seed (think corn/soybeans) production facility. There weren't any specific classes that helped me with my career but I'd say that the ones that involved problem solving and working in groups were the most helpful (senior lab, senior design, introduction to mechanical engineering, etc.). For those that go more into a design engineering role, the classes on programming, statics/dynamics, etc. are helpful. The most enjoyable part of engineering for me is being able to problem solve and help others. I love being able to utilize my skill set to improve the lives of others. This can happen at work where I make sure we're efficiently producing seed to feed the world or outside of work where I volunteer at various schools and perform science/engineering experiments with them. What made me become an engineer was my love for math/science when I was younger. That, coupled with my desire to be challenged, led me to the field of engineering. It took me awhile to decide what type of engineering I wanted to do but that came when I started exploring the various disciplines more. I'm still early in my career but eventually, I'd like to be on the board of directors or become a CEO of an agricultural company. I truly believe that I can drive change in a position like this and improve the perception of science/engineering within the community. In the short term, however, I'd like to become a maintenance supervisor at my company as this will allow me to get more hands and experience with leading teams. I'm not at my dream job yet but the position I'm currently in is definitely my ideal position for where I'm at in my career. I'm given a lot of freedom to explore and try other roles within me plant.
