I'm a sophomore in high school and I feel passionate about becoming an environmental engineer. I've already picked my classes for my junior year and I feel like I'm too behind because of my math level (geometry) and it so happens to be that I find science interesting even though I don't excel in it. I choose two science classes such as research chemistry and AP environmental science and the sequential elective of engineering, and algebra 2. I'm currently in an engineering class that my school ...

I want to apply to Georgia tech for environmental engineering. I feel like I need to do some kind of volunteering to sweeten my application since I???m mostly a B student, is there anything you can recommend I can do to make my application look better? I???m also having a hard time thinking of what kind of volunteering I can do that would be related to the field, thank you!

I have a BS and 2 MS in engineering (one in CE/Water Resources and another in Civil/Environmental engineering) and yet I feel dumb and lost at work everyday, to the point of considering a career change.

I've been working for a small Land Development company for a little bit over a year and still feel unfit and lost. Daily feelings of impostor syndrome. I 'learn' how to do something and by the time I have to do something similar again I don't really remember how to do it or there are ...

So glad you wrote, Laura. There could be a few things at play here, all of which I've experienced at some point in my own career. Only you can determine what mix of the below is actually going on.

    (1) Size of Transition. I've typically measured the ...

I can answer this from a professional/industry perspective, but not a school administrator perspective so for credit/transfer logistics differ to your school.

Hey Shaurya. Yes, it's usually pretty easy to change majors within engineering (Mech E to Env E), especially if you're still a freshman or sophomore - since most of the coursework is the same for those first years. You'll have to check w/ your adviser ...

Hi Molly, I graduated with a BS in Biology and have been working for a couple years at an energy efficiency consulting firm. I've been thinking about going back to school to get an environmental or civil engineering masters, because problem solving is something that I love. Do you have some suggestions for next steps? Thanks!

    Hi Lauren,
Thanks for writing. It's great that you've gotten some experience and have some good footing to make your next career move. I started as a Bio major as well, and then transferred into env engineering. I'd say school-wise, the difference was ...

    Hi Pneuma,
I'm not sure why your friends are discouraging you! But, regardless of the reason, it's YOUR career, and not theirs, so you should make the decision for yourself. Of course it's good to get input from people who are knowledgeable - for ...

Hi NJ, This is a question that lots of students struggle with - especially those students who are academically eligible for many extracurricular experiences. There are three types of experiences you would add to a resume (1) part time jobs during the ...

Hi, going green and be environmentally conscious has always been my thing. I figured why not take it up a notch and pursue a career in environmental engineering. My question is, how are the courses I'm going to have to take in order to become an environmental engineer? How is the gender distribution of the class and vigorousness of the courses?

Hello Jill. Thanks for writing! These are all excellent questions to think about.

Your interest in 'going green' is definitely something that relates to Environmental Engineering. But it also could relate to biology, architecture, politics, agriculture, ...

I am currently pursuing an engineering degree in electronics and communication; however I was never really interested in mathematics and computers. I have been a bright student throughout and scored good grades irrespective of the subjects. But now the idea of studying something which I might not seek a career in makes me lose interest and is affecting my grades. I am a second year student. I did not know about this vast application of computing and particularly programming languages applied in ...
