Sonia, Maryland asked Maria Marenco, Robert Bosch AddedWednesday, March 25, 2015 at 4:44 PM Influences I'm in 6th grade and I'm doing a research project on career options that interest me. Engineering is my first choice, so it would be great if you could answer my questions: Where did you go to school to learn the things you know? What childhood/youth experiences influenced you to choose you career choice? Did any adult influence you? What were your goals and did they change over time? Did you successfully complete these goals? I know these are a lot of questions so you can only answer 1 or 2 if you want. Thanks! I am currently expecting my first son and the last weeks have been completely crazy. I hate to have had you waiting for my answer, and hope that is still useful. First of all, none of my adult relatives chose engineering as a career path, in fact most of them are doctors. I went back and forth when I had to make the decision, should I take the technology or biology path? I tried to analyze myself. I am the ind of person that likes to understand how things work, and why sometimes they don't work. Mechanisms that form part of everyday objects like a watch or a car are fascinating for me. As for medicine, I decided that it would be very hard for me to separate work from private life. I am very sensitive to disease, and therefore I thought it would be too difficult to deal with it. As for goals, I wrote them over time. Once I decided I wanted to study engineering, I chose the mechanical branch, to stay as broad as possible (other engineering choices are much more limiting for the future). Then I moved to Germany, where the automotive industry has a high degree of development. I wanted to get into this industry, where I have been for the past 7 years. I do not close the possibility of changing the industry field in the future. That is one of the great advantages of the engineers, that you are capable of getting into several fields over your career, because your base is very generic. I hope this helped, please let me know if you have more questions, next time I hope to get back to you sooner! Sorry again!
