Can I be a doctor and a materials scientist too?

Hello! I first want to say that I love what you guys are doing, especially since women still aren't respected in many fields of science. I live in Kentucky and there is hardly any emphasis on science, so it makes it's difficult to find experiences- what should I do to find these experiences ? For my entire life I knew that I wanted to be a doctor, but recently I've been contemplating going into materials science. Is there any way that I can do both - become a doctor AND go to materials engineering school?

    Hi Kate,

One of the things about medicine in the US, is that you have to have an undergraduate degree before you apply to medical school.  No one says what that undergraduate degree has to be.  You just need to get certain prerequisite classes.  You could certainly do that with a degree in materials science or materials engineering.  There are a number of biomedical materials that could be very related to a medical career, and you may even consider an MD/PhD option when you apply medical school.  This would allow you to work in both medical research and clinical medicine.
