EngineerGirl Ambassador Sophia Benavente-Sayani interviewed Andrea Goldsmith as part of the Ambassadors program in 2022.
Andrea Goldsmith is Dean of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Princeton University where she is also a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Part One of this interview introduces Dr. Andrea Goldsmith and explores her entrance to engineering. She discusses why she chose to earn the degree and what her experiences were like as an undergraduate at University of California, Berkeley.
"I'm very proud of formulating the problem in a way that got to a very simple and intuitive answer that had a lot of impact in practice."
In Part Two, Andrea talks through her time building a company from the ground up, how her career has shifted to acadmia, and how she utilizes her lived experiences as Dean of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Part Three looks to the future, to the efforts being made to make new students feel welcome, and calls on young girls interested in STEM to keep pushing forward.
"That resilience of getting over coming from an under-resourced background will actually make you a better engineer and it will make you more persistent when you run up against challenges."
Andrea and Sophia close their converation talking about the difference between the east and west coast and Andrea leaves us with parting wisdom in Part Four.
