What is it like as a mechanical engineer in the automotive industry?

I've always wanted to be an engineer but I let someone talk me out of it because of college debt. I really enjoy cars and trucks and want to work on the engineering side of it. I can't choose between majoring in electrical or mechanical engineering. What would be the best one to choose in this situation.
