Girls Win Tech Prize Helping Dementia Patients

A trio of Nigerian-Irish teens have designed an app to help patients with dementia, called Memory Haven. Their creation won the Senior Division Grand prize in the 2020 Technovation Girls competition. The Memory Haven team also earned the People's Choice award.

The three girls - Rachael Akano, Margarent Akano, and Joy Njekwe - were inspired to create the app after their mentor, Evelyn Nomayo, told them about her mother’s struggles with dementia. Memory Haven can be used by both patients and caregivers and includes, among other features, reminder alerts and photo albums that allow users to flip through tagged photos to identify people.

Memory Haven will be available in app stores in the next month.

Zesha, the Junior Division Grand Prize Winning app, was developed by a girl from India and also helps dementia patients and caretakers.

Technovation Girls is an annual competition invites teams of girls from all over the world to solve real-world problems through technology. Memory Haven beat out more than 1500 submissions from 62 countries to take the top prize.

You can watch all the 2020 finalists describe their apps on the Technovation Girls website.
