How much does the college you go to matter?

I worry that because my school isn't well-known for its engineering degrees (we only have 2) that it will make it difficult to find a job because employers will hire people from schools with bigger names, so I feel like I should transfer to a more well know school to have a chance. How much does school name really matter in the hiring process? Am I overthinking this?

I am sure people have differing opinions on this, however, from my standpoint, the school matters a lot less than what you did at that school, what your grades were, and what you got involved in. I went to a California state school, and while it was known for its Engineering program, it was not a state University or private school. The only important piece that the college must have is proper accreditations, as non-accredited schools will not be seen the same way. But if your school is accredited, the school should not matter. Hard workers and intelligent students can come from any school, and just the same the best school in the country can produce poor workers. Get involved in organizations and academic societies that support your degree (like AICHE, SWE), and look for internships in your industry of choice for the summer. Personally I would prefer a candidate from an unknown school with good grades, involvement in various academic society's and extracurriculars, with internship experience, over a candidate from Cal Tech or MIT with no extra experience.
