Previous Next You Can Make a Difference PostedSaturday, July 18, 2020 at 4:29 PM Kate Gramling Great engineering achievements of the 20th century include wonderful examples of technology reflecting the best qualities in society. When we built technologies that respected all people equally – like water treatment –everyone benefited. When we enabled sweeping access to essential services – like electricity – everyone prospered. When we dared to chase a bold dream – like putting human beings on the moon – everyone looked up. Respect, equality, and hope: three qualities that we need more of today. These are uncertain times. The disparity between races, and between the haves and have-nots, has been growing and is now at an all-time high. With the added stress of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are scared, sad, confused, angry – or all of the above. Americans of color are more likely to die or experience injustice at the hands of people in authority than white Americans. Poor Americans regularly suffer and die because they lack access to healthy food, quality medical care, or fair means to improve their situation. Instead of creating common ground, our culture appears to be pushing people apart. In spite of all the information and sharing online, people are less informed about the world outside their circle of friends than perhaps any time in the past century. The consequences of all this are serious and interfering with our nation’s ability to protect its citizens and its future. What can we, as individuals, do about this? We can start by learning to accept – and believe in our heart – that every human being has the full right to life, liberty, and security of person. We must recognize and respect the worth of every individual. We can seek out information from reputable sources – outside of social media – and learn about issues from different points of view. Knowledge and understanding arm us against those who wish to deceive or divide us. We can call out injustice when we see it. We can help others, and do our part to keep the vulnerable safe and healthy. For now, that includes wearing a mask in public and finding ways to connect with others while keeping our distance. We can strive to shape the future in a positive way. Social change requires sustained effort and new challenges will arise in the years to come. We need citizens, leaders, and engineers prepared to face this endeavor with realistic optimism. As an EngineerGirl, you can show the world what is possible and what should be. With your help, the great achievements of the 21st century could also reflect the best parts of who we are. The EngineerGirl team is committed to finding new ways to support diversity and equity in all of our programs. Now, more than ever, we ask you to continue in these footsteps and create the world we need so that all our voices are heard. Filed Under News Like 0 Previous Next Previous Next
