She asked me to look at a book with numbers and equations in it. I have no idea what the book was about. She asked if that scared me to know more about the information and I said no it was not scary. She told me to go down to the guidance office and look up careers in engineering. There was no internet at the time in 1972. I looked up engineering and picked mechanical engineering because it seemed to have the most options. No one in my family was an engineer or talked about it as a career. My parents said ok and were generally supportive. I do not remember there being much reaction at all. I do recall my dad said no when I wanted a summer job at the ice cream store. He wanted me to get a summer job that would advance my career. That summer I got an internship at NASA in Greenbelt for no pay from a poster ad in the school guidance office for a program sponsored by American University. I found a carpool and went to work for 10 weeks.
