Close Up
  • What I Do

I have full technical responsibility for all electric propulsion devices designed, fabricated, tested, and delivered by our company to our users, who launch them into space. So, I direct and guide our staff of talented engineers to design, build, and ship the products that our customers depend upon.

  • Why Engineering?

I had grown up with an interest in science, and found engineering to be a way to translate that interest into developing and creating physical things and processes, and methods, to improve peoples' lives.

  • School Days

I attended the University of Pittsburgh, and earned a BS in Chemical Engineering.

  • Best Part

I think that developing an intuitive sense of how things work makes things much more available, and much less intimidating. Over the years, it's also given me the opportunity to travel to Europe, to Asia, and South America, letting me see and live in some of those places, opening my eyes, my mind, my heart, and even my mouth, to different places, different people, different foods.

  • Proud Moments

My proudest moments have been seeing people from my groups moving on and up, accomplishing unimaginable feats, from becoming CEO's of their own companies, to high-level executives across various industries. It brings me great joy as well, to see my teams rewarded for their efforts, and recognized for their immense efforts towards our success. Seeing and meeting their families, however, really brings home that they, and you, are all people first.

  • Challenges

We are often handed serious challenges, having to design for unheard of system performance, meeting or exceeding the demands of an ever-more competitive market for products and services. Most difficult though, are the challenges of time, having to do all of these things while opportunity gets ready to blink out, while competitors are themselves pushing to reach solutions, just as we are.

  • My Family

I've been married now for over seven years to the most remarkable person: a philosopher, biologist, IT professional, and soon to be a psychologist, my partner Tilda.

  • Dreams and Goals

I've had an opportunity to do and see all sorts of things, and would like to be able to help others, young people like yourselves, to find and realize your own dreams.

  • Inspiration

My inspiration from a very young age was Jacques Cousteau, who fearlessly explored our oceans and waterways, bringing the wonders of the sea to all of us. His message of the seeking of knowledge, for the purpose of conservation has bounded my own work and values.

  • Want to be an Engineer?

I am very clear about my enthusiasm for engineering as a career, noting the vast kinds of opportunities available to students and graduates of engineering programs. An engineering degree is like a ticket to the future, opening up windows to every sort of business or study you can imagine. The discipline of quantitative assessment makes you valuable to nearly every sort of team in industry.

  • Hobbies

I enjoy cooking, and gardening at home, but I NEVER miss a superhero movie, and am relishing the development of so many stories I loved in the comics into cinema, finally having the technologies to make those unbelievable stories come to life. By the way, those technologies were developed by engineers!

I'm a human, just like all of you, seeking, and finding opportunities to explore, to challenge and improve myself, and to serve our community and our planet, creating a better world than the one we all share. I've been blessed with a long and rich experience working in the aerospace industry, pushing people and things up into the sky, giving us all hope for better understanding of our world, and of each other.
